English as an Additional Language
At Banks Road, while the main language spoken at school is English, we have a diverse community of a wide range of languages spoken at home. We celebrate this diversity and ensure that all children, parents and carers are valued and included in our school community.
Mr Savage and Miss Barr work together to ensure that children, regardless of what language they speak as their primary language at home, make good or better progress at Banks Road. We ensure a well balanced curriculum is taught so that children feel safe, happy and challenged here at Banks Road. We welcome all children from around the world and celebrate their backgrounds and culture!
Our EAL children are supported primarily by quality first teaching within their classes. After a settling in period they may receive additional support from Teaching Assistants within school if required. This provision is dependent upon need and its main focus is upon developing pupil’s oracy and understanding. Once they have gained confidence; this time is used to develop their speaking and listening skills, writing, including grammar, punctuation and spelling and further development of reading skills according to their particular needs.
Thank you to all the parents who attended our cake and coffee morning on Tuesday 7th November and Monday 18th June. This was a great opportunity to meet Mr Savage (SENCO) and Miss Barr (EAL coordinator) as well as Gill Rowlands from EMTAS.
We are hoping to organise another coffee morning soon so keep looking out for further dates!

Our Malaysian Visitor
Meet Caden. He is the cousin from one of our students and lives in Malaysia. He has been visiting our school for three weeks and has enjoyed being part of year 5 with Mrs Dornan. Caden has been learning English here at Banks Road and getting to know the British culture. It has been an invaluable experience for Caden that he will cherish the rest of his life. Alongside this, it has also been enlightening for our pupils at Banks Road. They have been learning about Malaysian culture and learning some Mandarin.
Thank you for visiting us Caden, come back soon and we’ll be over soon to visit you (we hope)!
