We’re delighted to say that we’ve teamed up with the @LFCFoundation to work towards achieving the four Premier League Values!  We kick-started our partnership with a new Sports Breakfast Club  #WeCanDoIt

Year 5 took part in a fantastic gymnastics lesson led by Samantha Scotland @BTGymnastics. Children showcased a range of movements and used our gym equipment to demonstrate what they could do. Thank you Samantha; we had a great afternoon! #WeCanDoIt

Intent

Banks Road Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children understand and recognise the importance of physical and emotional development alongside maintaining good health.

We intend to deliver high-quality teaching using our whole school iPep scheme by providing learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education. We also want children to benefit from developing skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim.

At Banks Road we want children to learn how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, whilst understanding fairness and equity of play in order to embed life-long values.

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation

  • PE at Banks Road Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met through the use of iPep (PE scheme).
  • Pupils will participate in one high quality PE lesson each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities offered at Banks Road School. After school sports clubs are available and highly encouraged for all children to have a go and participate!
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which encourages not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership.
  • Children participate in both friendly and competitive football matches against other school communities within the area.
  • Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example, dance, skateboarding, bike ability and scooters.
  • Children in Year 3,4 and 5 have the opportunity to attend swimming lessons one term in the year. Year 6 also have top up lessons before moving forward to Year 7.

Impact

The impact of PE at Banks Road shows that children are motivated to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of extra curricular activities.

We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport to hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

We  also ensure to celebrate individual sporting successes and acknowledge differing sports that children may attend outside of school with enthusiasm.

Swimming

Each academic year children in key Stage 2 (Year 3,4,5 and 6) attend swimming lessons. Each year group attends the local swimming baths for one term in the year and are taught by professional swimming coaches. Children carry out a pre and post assessment in the water to see their progression over the term. They also get the opportunity to engage in safety lessons.
